Warning Signs and What They Can Tell You

Mud tubes

Soil-colored tubes on foundations, piers, masonry, plumbing penetrations, or framing strongly support a subterranean route. Tubes can remain after activity stops, so learn how to compare termite mud tubes vs. old damage.

Hard pellets or frass

Drywood termites push small, hard pellets through openings in infested wood. Look-alikes include carpenter-ant debris, powderpost-beetle frass, and ordinary sawdust. Compare them in our termite droppings vs. frass guide.

Swarmers and discarded wings

Repeated indoor swarmers or piles of wings near the same window, door, vent, or light deserve inspection. Because Formosan swarmers are drawn to lights at dusk, outdoor swarmers confirm termites nearby but do not automatically prove that a colony is inside the home.

Soft, hollow, or damaged wood

Subterranean galleries may contain soil, while drywood galleries can remain hidden inside wood that looks intact. Leaks and fungal decay can weaken wood independently. Visible evidence cannot establish the full hidden extent or structural safety.

When Do Termites Swarm in Louisiana?

Louisiana’s swarm calendar is a useful contrast because native subterranean, Formosan, and drywood termites differ in season, time of day, and attraction to light.

Timing and time of day support an identification; they do not prove one. Weather, location, and indoor conditions all shift the calendar.

Why Formosan Termites Need Faster Assessment

The Formosan subterranean termite is an invasive Coptotermes species that LSU AgCenter describes as the most destructive structural pest in Louisiana. It follows the subterranean-control route, but its risk profile is different from an ordinary one-point household clue. Formosan colonies can contain millions of individuals, are larger and more aggressive than native colonies, and can build moisture-holding carton material in structural voids.

That does not mean every evening swarm is Formosan or that every sighting signals immediate structural failure. It means an indoor swarm, active tubes, carton material, or widespread hidden damage should move the case toward an experienced licensed inspection. Get a Licensed Inspection Promptly If

  • live termites, repeated indoor swarmers, or recurring piles of wings are present;
  • mud tubes enter framing, flooring, walls, or another structural area;
  • hard pellets return after careful cleanup;
  • wood is soft, sagging, extensively damaged, or potentially structural;
  • Formosan termites are plausible in your parish or activity appears in several areas;
  • a property transaction, structural fumigation, or a wood-destroying insect report is involved;
  • you cannot confidently separate termites from ants or another wood pest.

Photos and observation tools can improve triage, but they cannot establish colony location, current activity, hidden extent, or structural capacity.

Treatment Paths Depend on the Termite Type

Native subterranean

Professional liquid soil treatments and monitored bait systems are the main categories. Foundation type, soil, drainage, entry points, access, and prior treatments affect the plan.

Formosan

Control follows subterranean-termite principles, but because Formosan termites can establish above-ground carton nests, treatment planning should begin with an inspection that identifies colony location, moisture conditions, and accessible treatment routes. Do not rely on a single retail spot treatment.

Drywood

Infested furniture or removable wood may be isolated, removed, or professionally treated. A genuinely limited and accessible structural infestation may be considered for localized treatment or wood replacement. Widespread, inaccessible, or uncertain structural activity can lead to whole-structure fumigation.

Moisture-damaged wood

Correct leaks, drainage, ventilation, and wood-soil contact, then assess damaged wood. Moisture correction removes a condition that supports pests and decay, but it does not restore structural strength or prove that termites are gone.

Safety boundary: Louisiana treatment standards, the structure, and the product label determine professional application details. How to Choose a Termite Company in Louisiana

Structural pest work is regulated by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) through its Structural Pest Control Commission, under the Structural Pest Control Law (La. R.S. 3:3301 et seq.). LDAF licenses structural pest control in separate categories, including General Pest Control, Commercial Vertebrate Control, Termite Control, Structural Fumigation, Commodity Fumigation, and Ship Fumigation.

  1. Verify the company and category. Termite inspection and control fall under the Termite Control category. If whole-structure tenting is proposed, Structural Fumigation is the relevant category. Confirm current licensing through the LDAF Structural Pest Control program.
  2. Ask who supervises and performs the work. A wood-destroying insect report must be issued by a licensee in termite control, or by a certified WDIR technician working under that licensee’s supervision.
  3. Require an evidence-based proposal. It should identify the organism or treatment route, affected areas, access limits, recommended work, and unresolved conditions.
  4. Read every guarantee and renewal term. Compare treatment area, exclusions, follow-up inspections, renewal fees, treatment-only versus repair coverage, and transfer rules.
  5. Distinguish treatment from repair coverage. A treatment-only agreement is not the same as a repair warranty. Read limits, waiting periods, and renewal terms.

Buying or Selling a Home: Louisiana’s Termite Report

Louisiana’s termite letter is the Wood Destroying Insect Report (WDIR). Under the state rules, it is issued only for inspections made in connection with an act of sale or refinance of a structure, and it is not renewable or issued for other purposes.

  • It is a visual inspection of readily accessible areas, including areas such as bath traps with visible access, crawl spaces of raised pier construction, and attics reached by a permanent ladder or stairs.
  • It does not provide a guarantee to repair damage caused by wood-destroying insects.
  • It carries a Louisiana-specific guarantee: if live subterranean termites covered by the report are found in any readily accessible area within 90 days of the inspection, the property is treated at no charge, subject to the rule. This guarantee is for treatment, not repair, and applies to subterranean termites.
  • It is issued on the official state form used for a sale or refinance; a buyer or lender may be the party that requests it.

Read the report, attachments, inaccessible-area notes, and any treatment proposal together. A clean-looking accessible area cannot clear a concealed wall, slab joint, or closed crawlspace section that was not inspected.

What Does Termite Treatment Cost in Louisiana?

There is no responsible single Louisiana price. The termite group, activity location, structure size, foundation, access, previous treatment, local treatment versus fumigation, monitoring, moisture correction, repairs, and guarantee terms can all change the total.
